The Canadian Red Cross Society is a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians and the most vulnerable throughout the world. We are seeking a dynamic Food and Logistics Coordinator to provide a broad range of supports to maximize funding for the purchase of nutritious food for the Student Nutrition Program in Thunder Bay and district. Reporting to the Senior Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and making recommendations for improved food procurement, purchasing and distribution by supporting the development of relationships with local food producers, retailers and distribution networks.

In this role you will:
- Develop resources and strategies to improve the supply chain logistics, purchasing, inventory management, distribution and transportation of food products amongst existing local programs by fostering partnerships, aggregating products and people, and building economies of scale in Thunder Bay and district;
- Support the efficient sourcing, purchasing, and aggregation of food products within SNP by:
- Facilitating wholesale or bulk orders
- Negotiating favourable pricing from local and large-scale businesses;
- Acquiring food donations; and
- Delivering training to program volunteers around effective food purchasing strategies.
- Seek opportunities to develop efficient storage, and distribution of food products within SNP from vendors/donors to central locations and/or program sites;
- Gather quantitative and qualitative data to develop and evaluate projects;
- Work with the Public Health Unit to identify, source and purchase equipment for local programs when funding is made available;
- Work with individual programs on third-party cost-saving initiatives like the voucher program;
- Provide technical assistance with organizing and coordinating events like The Great Big Crunch and Cereal Drive;
- Organize and coordinate the distribution of in-kind donations, donated food and gifts;
- Create resources for local programs;
- Present Food and Logistics issues at external meetings and discussions as required, including local committee meetings and monthly Ontario-wide Food and Logistics conference calls;
- Work collaboratively with Food and Logistic Coordinators across Ontario to share information and leverage partnership opportunities;
- Provide broader support to the Program Lead and Community Development Coordinators as required;
What we are looking for:
- Minimum of three years of related experience working in food purchasing, supply chain management, warehousing and distribution;
- Post-secondary education in related field;
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook;
- Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle available for business use
- Track record of negotiating favourable pricing, building and maintaining effective relationships with vendors/partners;
- Demonstrated project/program management skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Knowledge of food procurement processes, such as ordering, receiving, storing and inventory of food and supplies;
- Knowledge of local and regional retail and foodservice distribution channels;
- Knowledge of food safety and health and safety regulations pertaining to food establishments;
- Is approachable and welcoming;
- Self motivated, adaptable and pitches in when needed;
- Ability to show and report progress and follow-up;
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail;
- Ability to work non-traditional hours and travel when required
Majority of work is performed in an office environment with the occasional requirement to work overtime hours, often with short notice.
Some travel may be required.
